How to Distinguish Between A-Grade and B-Grade Battery Cells

In the lithium battery industry, the quality of battery cells directly determines the performance, safety, and lifespan of the entire battery pack. Understanding the differences between A, B, and C-grade battery cells is essential for any battery pack manufacturer or buyer seeking long-term, stable power solutions.

What Is an A-Grade Battery Cell?

A-grade cells represent the highest quality in lithium battery manufacturing. These cells meet strict industrial standards in terms of materials, technology, energy retention, charging/discharging stability, size uniformity, and thermal management.

Typically, A-grade cells are ordered directly by battery pack factories from top-tier cell manufacturers. Production is arranged based on the customer's technical capacity and production needs. Once manufactured, A-grade cells are delivered to clients after passing all quality assurance procedures.

Key Features of A-Grade Cells:

  1. High Capacity Retention: A-grade cells retain strong capacity even after multiple charge/discharge cycles, ensuring extended runtime.

  2. Low Internal Resistance: Less energy is lost during discharge, improving overall power delivery efficiency.

  3. Excellent Consistency: All cells within the same batch show tight tolerances in voltage, capacity, and impedance—essential for safe and stable battery packs.

  4. Superior Safety: These cells undergo rigorous testing, including overcharge, over-discharge, short-circuit, compression, and puncture tests.

What Is a B-Grade Battery Cell?

B-grade cells are slightly lower in quality compared to A-grade. In a typical production line, top-tier manufacturers might produce around 2% off-spec cells, while second or third-tier factories may see defect rates between 5%-10%.

B-grade cells often arise due to:

  • Slight deviations in capacity, length, width, or thickness.

  • Being stored in the warehouse for 3–6 months without shipment, even if originally qualified.

Typical Characteristics of B-Grade Cells:

  1. Moderate Capacity Retention: Capable of decent performance, but the capacity may decline faster over time.

  2. Higher Internal Resistance: Slightly less efficient in delivering energy.

  3. Weaker Consistency: Variability in capacity and voltage exists but may be acceptable in low-demand applications.

  4. Moderate Safety: Tested for safety but may have limitations under extreme conditions.

What Is a C-Grade Battery Cell?

C-grade cells represent the lowest quality category. These cells may come from:

  • Storage of over 8 months without shipment.

  • Natural degradation due to self-discharge, dust, or moisture.

  • Performance drop after long idle time.

Key Issues with C-Grade Cells:

  1. Low Capacity Retention: Capacity may drop significantly after short usage. Often only 50%-60% of equivalent A-grade performance.

  2. High Internal Resistance: Energy loss is significant, leading to poor discharge efficiency.

  3. Poor Consistency: High variance in parameters makes them unsuitable for battery packs.

  4. Low Safety: Potential for overheating or fire under stress or misuse.

How to Tell the Difference: A vs B vs C Grade Cells

To avoid purchasing misrepresented cells, professional buyers should use the following criteria:

  1. Capacity Testing: Use charge/discharge equipment to test capacity retention.

  2. Internal Resistance Testing: Measure using a milliohm meter. A-grade cells have much lower resistance.

  3. Batch Consistency Check: Evaluate a group of cells for uniform voltage, capacity, and impedance.

  4. Safety Testing: Conduct overcharge, short-circuit, puncture, and thermal tests.

  5. Original Manufacturer Test Reports: Reliable A-grade cells are accompanied by cell-level reports, including internal resistance, voltage, capacity, and product codes (matching QR codes). Missing or manipulated data may indicate B or C-grade status.

Industry Warning: QR Code Replacements & Grading Manipulations

Buyers beware: Some cell resellers, particularly in Shenzhen and Guangzhou, have developed techniques to re-label and manipulate battery cell identities. They may:

  • Replace or tamper with QR codes on B-grade cells.

  • Re-sort and redefine large batches through excessive “binning” to create pseudo A-grade labels.

This leads to B-grade cells being sold as A-grade, causing unexpected failures, warranty issues, or even safety incidents.
